18OE: On the Rails of the Orient Express is a railway simulation game that covers the entire European continent. There are five types of companies: private, minor, regional, major and national. As in all 18XX games, players invest in railroad companies by purchasing shares, and the holder of the majority shares of each company decides how the company acts on the game board. Depending on the companies' actions, the value of the shares changes and players can receive dividends for the shares they own. Whoever has the most money after adding up the value of the shares owned wins. The objective of the game is to travel the Orient Express from one of the Western capitals to Constantinople.

While the full game requires 12 hours of gameplay, shorter scenarios are included that require 4 and 6 hours each.
